Profile Bio
I worked in adult education at the University of Sussex for 30years, teaching on the Landscape Studies BA and the Geography BA degrees. My doctorate was in the growth of interwar suburbia, but my interests are in all aspects of the British landscape from geology to urban forms, seaside resorts to industrial history and agriculture to the social makeup of rural communities. I have appeared on TV with 'Who do you think you are' as the history man and similarly with Michael Portillo's travel series. I lead guided walks across Sussex and have been part of Brighton Festival Fringe for over 15 years doing tours of Brighton. I am a judge for CPRE Sussex 'Landscape Awards' and organise their guided walk programme each year. In over 40 years I have spoken to a wide variety of local interest and professional groups across Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Hampshire, Isle of White and Greater London including working with universities of Plymouth, Nottingham and Greenwich Maritime. I am the Editor for the annual Sussex Industrial History journal. My approach is to see all landscapes as holistic, with geology linking to agriculture, work and settlement; art and literature opening a window on past lives, and the idea that all landscapes show 'Continuity & Change'. I work with PowerPoint and bring all my own kit.
